Recently on Media Watch, Paul Barry had Eric Beecher and Alan Kohler on to talk about the demise in the journalism industry: www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s4481060.htmThey both thought that government funded public interest journalism could be a solution. Paul Barry said the "taxpayers" would never go for it and we should all just reach in our pockets and pay for journalism but he obviously doesn't understand how taxes work. Beecher said that, in much the same way as the court system is a publicly funded but independent system, so too could public interest journalism be setup to run this way.

There's a reason I'm not paying to go behind the NewsCorp paywall, and not paying to go behind the Fairfax one (AFR) either. Admittedly its mostly because I cannot afford it but the second reason is I don't consider the journalism good enough.
